District Discipline Action Plan: A Commitment to Supporting Students and Keeping Schools Inclusive

Our staff and I are committed to creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where every single student can learn, grow, and succeed.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) reviews discipline data from districts across the state each year. Based on this review, our district was identified as being among the top 20% of districts statewide in one or more discipline measures—specifically related to out-of-school suspensions, expulsions, or disparities in how discipline is applied—over a three-year period.

When a district is identified in this way, Illinois law requires the district to develop and publicly share a Discipline Action Plan. This plan outlines the steps we are taking to:

  • Reduce the use of out-of-school suspensions and expulsions whenever possible
  • Strengthen positive, proactive approaches to student behavior
  • Ensure discipline practices are fair, consistent, and supportive for all students
  • Address and reduce any disproportionality in disciplinary outcomes

It is important for families to know that being identified does not mean our schools are unsafe. Instead, it signals an opportunity and a responsibility to reflect, improve, and strengthen how we support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Our District Discipline Action Plan reflects our commitment to:

  • Keeping students engaged in learning
  • Building strong relationships between students and adults
  • Using restorative and instructional approaches to address behavior
  • Partnering with families as we work toward continuous improvement

We invite families and community members to review the plan below and join us in this important work. Together, we can ensure our schools remain places of belonging, accountability, and growth for every student.
